New to New Jersey car shipping? Watch this first!

Before you book, take six minutes to learn exactly how auto transport works — from getting your quote to handing over your keys and inspecting your vehicle at delivery. This video was created by our team and explains the full process in clear, simple language. It’s the same overview our customer service team provides to first-time car shippers every day.

Follow along to see how we manage New Jersey auto transport from the port corridors of Newark and Elizabeth through the pharmaceutical campuses of New Brunswick and Trenton to the shore communities of Toms River and Atlantic City.

[00:00] – Introduction to New Jersey Auto Transport
We begin by explaining why New Jersey — the most densely populated state in the country — is one of the most active and logistically complex vehicle shipping markets in the United States. The NJ Turnpike and I-95 corridor through Newark and Elizabeth carries more auto transport volume per mile than virtually any other highway in the country, yet New Jersey’s urban density and narrow residential streets create real coordination challenges that we address head-on for every shipment.

[00:58] – How To Arrange Auto Transport
Learn how easy it is to schedule your New Jersey vehicle transport. Whether you’re relocating a car from Princeton to Florida for a retirement move or shipping a pharmaceutical executive’s vehicle from the Roche or Johnson & Johnson campus to a new assignment in Chicago, we explain how the booking process works and how carriers navigate New Jersey’s I-95, I-78, I-287, and Garden State Parkway corridors.

[01:29] – How Pricing Tiers Work
New Jersey auto shipping costs vary by route, season, and service tier. Proximity to New York City puts New Jersey at the top of the East Coast carrier network, meaning northbound and southbound routes are extremely well served. Short hauls to New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware price very favorably. Long-haul vehicle transport to California, Washington, and the Mountain West reflects the full transcontinental distance.

[02:48] – Where We Ship
We transport vehicles throughout the entire state of New Jersey — from the urban corridors of Newark and Jersey City through the suburban sprawl of Middlesex and Monmouth Counties to the shore communities of the Jersey Shore and the Pine Barrens communities near Atlantic City. South Jersey and Camden-area pickups connect to the Philadelphia carrier network through I-76 and I-295.

[03:06] – When To Expect Pickup
Pickup timing depends on route availability, carrier scheduling, and your chosen tier. New Jersey’s position on the I-95 corridor — between New York and Philadelphia, and at the northern terminus of the Florida Snowbird route — means carrier frequency is among the highest in the country. Expect standard pickup windows of 1–4 business days in most of the state. Shore communities in Ocean County and Cape May County may require slightly longer windows during peak summer season when beach traffic limits carrier routing options.

[03:37] – How Long Shipping Takes
Get realistic transit time expectations for routes between New Jersey and Florida, California, Texas, Georgia, the Carolinas, and the Midwest. The Florida Snowbird corridor — one of the most iconic auto hauling lanes in the country — runs primarily on I-95 south and typically takes 2–4 days. Cross-country vehicle shipments to California and Washington take 7–10 days.

[03:55] – Preparing Your Vehicle
Before pickup, we recommend cleaning your vehicle, removing personal items, and photographing every panel. For New Jersey-specific preparation: remove your E-ZPass transponder from the windshield before shipping — it will be charged on New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and other regional toll roads if left in the vehicle during transport. If your vehicle has been exposed to coastal salt air near the Shore, document any pre-existing undercarriage or paint condition carefully on the Bill of Lading.

[04:25] – What To Expect At Pickup
We walk through the inspection and Bill of Lading process. In Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken, and other dense urban cores, carriers coordinate a meet-point at a nearby accessible commercial street or parking lot when narrow brownstone blocks and permit-only parking restrict access. Suburban pickups from Edison, Cherry Hill, Woodbridge, and similar communities are straightforward door-to-door. Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst pickups coordinate through the base transportation office.

[04:57] – What To Expect At Delivery
The final inspection and delivery process is explained step by step, including how vehicle deliveries are handled in gated communities on the Jersey Shore, high-rise waterfront buildings in Hoboken and Jersey City, and narrow residential streets throughout Hudson and Essex Counties.

Why New Jersey is one of the most active auto transport markets on the East Coast

New Jersey occupies a singular position in the national auto transport network. As the most densely populated state in the country — 9.3 million residents packed into 8,723 square miles — New Jersey generates a volume of vehicle shipping demand per square mile that no other state can match. But raw density only tells part of the story. New Jersey’s position as the corridor between two of the largest metro areas on the continent — New York City to the northeast and Philadelphia to the southwest — means that every car carrier running the I-95 East Coast corridor passes directly through the Garden State on nearly every major southbound and northbound run. The result is car hauling volume per highway mile that rivals any corridor in the United States.

The pharmaceutical industry is the structural backbone of New Jersey’s professional vehicle transport market. Johnson & Johnson (New Brunswick), Merck (Rahway/Kenilworth), Pfizer (Parsippany), Novartis (East Hanover), Roche (Nutley/Parsippany), and dozens of smaller biotech and specialty pharma firms maintain major New Jersey campuses. Executive and scientist vehicle relocations between these campuses and facilities in California’s Bay Area, North Carolina’s Research Triangle, and the Chicago and Boston markets generate a steady, year-round flow of professional auto shipping that insulates New Jersey’s vehicle transport market from purely seasonal swings.

The interstate corridors that move New Jersey vehicles

Four primary highway arteries define New Jersey’s auto transport network:

I-95 / New Jersey Turnpike (The primary East Coast spine): Enters New Jersey from Delaware at the Delaware Memorial Bridge and runs northeast through Camden, Trenton, New Brunswick, Newark, and Elizabeth before crossing into New York at the George Washington Bridge and the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels. The New Jersey Turnpike section of I-95 is the single most important auto transport highway in the state — and arguably the most carrier-dense corridor on the entire East Coast. Nearly every auto carrier moving vehicles between New England, New York, and the Southeast runs the Turnpike through New Jersey. The Turnpike’s dual roadways, truck lanes, and 24-hour service plazas make it the backbone of multi-car transporter routing through the Northeast.

Garden State Parkway (The north-south Shore connector): Runs the full length of New Jersey from the New York border near Paramus south to Cape May at the southern tip of the state. The Parkway is the primary artery for vehicles moving between the shore communities of Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, and Cape May Counties and the rest of the state. It is also the key connector for vehicles originating at the Jersey Shore that ultimately link to I-95 for southbound Florida runs. All-electronic tolling on the Parkway means E-ZPass transponders should be removed from vehicles before car shipping.

I-78 (The central New Jersey east-west corridor): Enters New Jersey from Pennsylvania via the Easton-Phillipsburg area and runs east through Clinton, Somerville, Scotch Plains, Union, and Elizabeth before merging with I-95/NJ Turnpike near Newark. I-78 is the primary carrier route connecting the pharmaceutical corridor of Morris and Somerset Counties to the New York metro carrier network and is the main artery for vehicle transport between New Jersey and the Lehigh Valley and Harrisburg areas of Pennsylvania.

I-287 (The New Jersey outer beltway): Loops through central and northern New Jersey from the Staten Island area near Perth Amboy northwest through Piscataway, Somerset, Bridgewater, Bedminster, Morristown, and Parsippany before connecting to I-80 near Wayne. I-287 is the key orbital highway for New Jersey’s pharmaceutical and corporate campus belt, providing auto carriers access to Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, Merck in Kenilworth and Rahway, Pfizer in Parsippany, and dozens of other major employers without entering the congested Hudson River crossing corridors.

Vehicles shipping to or from the Newark/Elizabeth area, Edison, Woodbridge, Cherry Hill, and the Trenton corridor benefit from the highest carrier frequency in the state — effectively the same carrier density as the New York metro. Shore communities in Ocean County and Cape May County have good but somewhat more limited access, and Expedited tier is recommended for any time-sensitive Shore delivery during peak summer weekends when beach traffic complicates car hauling routes.

New Jersey’s position in the national carrier network: the I-95 Northeast gateway and Snowbird corridor

Unlike California or Washington State — which function as western termini where vehicles arrive and depart from a single coastal endpoint — New Jersey is a true through-state and gateway for the national car shipping network. Every auto carrier running the East Coast I-95 spine passes through New Jersey twice per year at minimum: northbound in spring during the Snowbird return, and southbound in fall during the Snowbird departure. This creates the most consistent bidirectional vehicle hauling density on the East Coast outside of Florida itself. No other state between Maine and Georgia sees the continuous two-way carrier volume that New Jersey experiences across all four seasons.

The Newark-Elizabeth interchange — where I-95/NJ Turnpike, I-78, and the Garden State Parkway converge within a few square miles — functions as the northeastern anchor of the entire East Coast auto transport network. Car carriers staging in this corridor have access to more routing options, more available freight, and more loading flexibility than at any other single point between Boston and Baltimore. The Port of Newark/Elizabeth adds an additional dimension: international vehicle shipments flowing through the port integrate with domestic auto shipping operations in the same geographic hub, creating a concentration of vehicle logistics infrastructure unmatched in the Northeast.

The Snowbird effect creates a structural pricing dynamic that distinguishes New Jersey from nearly every other state. Unlike California, where outbound and inbound vehicle shipping demand are roughly balanced year-round, New Jersey has a predictable directional imbalance: fall southbound (NJ to FL) is the peak demand direction, and spring northbound (FL to NJ) is the return surge. But there is a lesser-known implication: auto carriers returning empty from Florida need loads going south again, which creates a window of competitive pricing for New Jersey northbound departures in January and February. Shippers with flexible timing who can move their vehicle in January or early February often find the lowest outbound rates of the year — the best pricing window for New Jersey car transport that most shippers never know to use.

The practical implications of New Jersey’s network position vary by location within the state. Suburban NJ pickup windows near the Turnpike corridor are among the shortest on the East Coast — often 1–2 business days for Standard tier. Urban Hudson County requires meet-point coordination as described in the section below. Shore communities south of Toms River have longer standard pickup windows due to distance from the Turnpike carrier trunk route, and Expedited tier is the reliable choice for any time-sensitive vehicle shipment from those communities. Lakewood and the Ocean County inland communities sit in a middle zone — better carrier access than the barrier islands, but not quite Turnpike-corridor frequency.

Shipping a car in the New Jersey–New York metro area: what you need to know

New Jersey’s proximity to New York City creates a set of urban logistics considerations that differ meaningfully from suburban and rural auto transport. In the dense urban municipalities of Hudson County — Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Weehawken, and Union City — residential streets are built on a 19th-century grid of narrow blocks, permit-only parking zones, and loading restrictions that make it physically impossible for a standard 75-foot multi-car open transporter to operate door-to-door. The situation in older sections of Newark, Elizabeth, and Paterson is similar.

In these areas, carriers coordinate a meet-point at a nearby accessible commercial corridor, surface lot, or shopping center parking area within a reasonable driving distance of your address. In Jersey City, common meet-points include the commercial streets near Liberty State Park, the Journal Square area, and the Route 1&9 corridor in Kearny. In Hoboken, the Washington Street corridor and the parking areas near the Hoboken Terminal are standard. For Newark, carriers typically stage at accessible points along McCarter Highway (Route 21) or the commercial zones near I-78. Your carrier will contact you directly to confirm the exact meet-point location.

Suburban New Jersey is an entirely different vehicle shipping experience. Communities in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Burlington Counties — with their wider residential streets and accessible cul-de-sacs — are almost entirely door-to-door capable. The same applies to Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Evesham, and the suburban communities of South Jersey. If you are in suburban New Jersey, standard door-to-door auto transport service applies just as it would in any other suburban market in the country.

One additional note for New Jersey shippers who are also considering New York City delivery or pickup: the Manhattan protocol is even more restrictive. If your origin or destination is Manhattan, please refer to our New York State car shipping page, which covers the borough-by-borough meet-point protocol in detail.

New Jersey auto transport hubs ranked by carrier frequency

Not all New Jersey locations are equally accessible. Carrier frequency — the number of car carriers who can realistically serve a given pickup or delivery point — is the primary driver of pickup window length. Here is how New Jersey’s major markets rank:

Tier 1 — Daily Carrier Access: Newark, Elizabeth, Edison, Woodbridge, New Brunswick, Cherry Hill, Trenton, Camden, Hamilton

Tier 2 — Frequent Carrier Access: Jersey City, Paterson, Clifton, Piscataway, Somerville, Toms River, Parsippany, Princeton, Hackensack, Vineland

Tier 3 — Regular but Limited Carrier Access: Atlantic City, Asbury Park, Long Branch, Freehold, Bridgeton

Tier 4 — Requires Coordination (Meet-Point May Apply): Cape May, Ocean City (NJ), Stone Harbor, Avalon, Wildwood, Long Beach Island (Beach Haven, Surf City), Hoboken (urban), Jersey City Heights, Union City

The Snowbird corridor, pharma relocation cycle, and New Jersey vehicle shipping timing

New Jersey’s vehicle shipping calendar is driven by three overlapping demand cycles that experienced shippers learn to use to their advantage. The Snowbird cycle runs heaviest southbound from October through December and northbound from February through April — creating the most predictable seasonal pricing pattern of any state on the East Coast. The pharma and corporate relocation cycle follows a spring and fall rhythm tied to executive and scientist moves between New Jersey’s Route 1 Research Corridor and campuses in California, North Carolina, Illinois, and the broader national pharma network. The Shore season adds its own surge from June through August, when demand from shore communities is high but carrier access to barrier islands and coastal roads is most complex. Understanding which cycle is dominant when you need to ship is the single most useful tool for managing auto transport cost and timing in New Jersey.

When the Snowbird return and pharma spring relocation cycle overlap in March and April, northbound I-95 carrier capacity fills quickly. Book early — at least two to three weeks ahead for Shore-area vehicle transport during this window. Fall (September through November) is the best overall window for competitive auto shipping pricing on most routes: Shore season has ended, southbound Snowbird carrier flow is strong, and carrier frequency statewide is at or near its annual peak. Winter is fully serviceable for vehicle hauling, but the NJ-to-Florida southbound corridor sees rate pressure from December through January as Snowbird demand peaks; eastbound and long-haul routes to Texas, Colorado, and California are most competitively priced in January and February when carriers need westbound and southbound loads.

JB MDL PCS moves add a third layer of demand that overlaps unpredictably with the civilian cycles. Military PCS orders typically cluster in the May through August window, which coincides with Shore season peak — meaning summer is simultaneously the most demand-compressed and most logistically complex season for vehicle shipping across New Jersey. If your PCS orders allow any flexibility on report date, even a two-week shift into late September can produce meaningfully better pricing and shorter pickup windows for your vehicle relocation.

Best time to ship a car to or from New Jersey — the complete seasonal guide

A New Jersey car transport truck with a full load depicted in a montage in all four seasons

New Jersey’s auto transport pricing and carrier availability are shaped by three overlapping seasonal forces: the Snowbird corridor (the dominant I-95 Florida lane), the Jersey Shore season, and the pharma and corporate relocation cycles that concentrate demand in spring and fall. Understanding how these forces interact determines which window is best for your vehicle shipping timeline and budget.

Swipe to view full table →

Period Inbound (into New Jersey) Outbound (from New Jersey)
Spring (Mar–May) Snowbird returns flooding northbound I-95; shore communities reactivating; pharma spring relocation surge creates excellent inbound carrier frequency. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for Shore addresses. Snowbird departures south beginning; pharma outbound picks up. Competitive pricing for southbound and westbound routes. Standard tier generally reliable for non-Shore addresses.
Summer (Jun–Aug) Shore season peak; JB MDL PCS peak; beach traffic complicates Shore access. Highest demand period statewide. Book 3+ weeks ahead for Shore addresses. Expedited recommended for barrier island and coastal communities. High outbound demand driven by Shore and PCS cycles; carrier frequency remains strong on Turnpike corridor. Expedited recommended for time-sensitive moves and any Shore-area origin. Standard tier adequate for most suburban Turnpike-corridor origins.
Fall (Sep–Nov) Shore season ends; carrier access statewide improves. Best overall inbound carrier availability of the year. Pharma fall relocation cycle adds demand but does not restrict availability for most locations. Snowbirds departing south; strong southbound I-95 flow. Best window for Florida Snowbird departures. Competitive pricing on most routes. Best overall season for outbound NJ vehicle shipping; book early for October and November FL departures.
Winter (Dec–Feb) Northbound carriers lighter; serviceable with extra transit buffer. Turnpike ice events possible but rarely cause more than one-day delays. Expedited recommended for time-sensitive inbound moves. Best pricing window for inbound NJ from Florida as carriers need northbound loads. NJ-to-FL demand high Dec–Jan; rates under pressure. Eastbound and cross-country routes (TX, CO, CA) most competitive Jan–Feb as carriers need westbound loads. Expedited recommended for southbound FL departures in December. January is the best-value month for cross-country vehicle shipping.

New Jersey auto transport rates range from approximately $3.00 per mile on the very short New York and Pennsylvania hauls to $0.55 per mile on full cross-country routes to California and Washington — because car carriers spread fixed costs across more miles on longer hauls, making transcontinental vehicle shipping more economical per mile than short regional moves. This per-mile compression is consistent across Standard, Expedited, and Rush tiers; the tier premium is a flat percentage, not a per-mile add-on. For budget planning on cross-country vehicle transport, the base Standard rate is the right starting point; add 18% for Expedited and 38% for Rush.

Standard, Expedited, or Rush — which tier is right for your New Jersey shipment?

Direct Express Auto Transport pioneered the three-tiered pricing model that is still for the most part unique to us. Each tier represents a different level of carrier incentive — the higher the tier, the more attractive your shipment is to carriers on the dispatch board, and the faster your vehicle gets assigned. Here is how each tier performs specifically on New Jersey routes:

Swipe to view full table →

Tier Best for New Jersey when… What to expect
Standard You have flexible timing and a suburban Turnpike-corridor address; budget is a priority; you are shipping during fall or early spring when carrier availability is high statewide Listed at market rate; carrier assigned when an available auto carrier is routed your way. Typical pickup in 1–4 business days for Tier 1 and Tier 2 hubs. Longer windows for Shore and southern communities. No upfront payment — pay at delivery.
Expedited You have a Shore community address in summer; you are shipping from a JB MDL or NWS Earle address with a fixed report date; pharma corporate relocation with a deadline; or you are shipping during peak demand windows (Oct–Dec southbound, Mar–Apr northbound) Listed above market rate; attracts car carriers faster. Typical pickup in 1–3 business days. ~18% above Standard pricing. Strongly recommended for Shore addresses June–August, all JB MDL PCS moves with fixed report dates, and any pharma executive relocation with a hard deadline.
Rush You need pickup within 24–48 hours; emergency relocation; last-minute PCS orders; estate or auction vehicle with a hard deadline; or you are shipping from a Tier 4 remote location and need guaranteed pickup speed Listed well above market rate; highest priority auto carrier assignment — often same-day or next-day pickup. ~38% above Standard pricing. Best for emergency relocations, last-minute military PCS orders, estate and auction vehicle transport, and any situation where pickup speed is more important than cost.

In New Jersey’s market, the choice of tier is driven less by general preference and more by the specific geography and timing of your shipment. Shore community vehicle transport in summer almost always benefits from Expedited, because Standard windows in July and August for barrier island and coastal addresses can stretch beyond what most shippers expect. JB MDL PCS moves with fixed report dates are another clear Expedited or Rush scenario — the cost premium is small relative to the risk of missing a report date. For pharmaceutical executive relocations on the Route 1 corridor, where moving timelines are often dictated by start dates, Expedited is the professional standard. Suburban Middlesex, Somerset, and Morris County shippers with flexible timelines are ideal Standard tier candidates — the carrier density is high enough that Standard pickup windows are short even without the premium.

How to ship a car to or from New Jersey in 4 steps

Step 1 — Get an instant quote. Use our online calculator for a real-time price based on your exact pickup and delivery locations, vehicle type, and preferred service tier. No registration required. No phone call required.

Step 2 — Book and we assign a carrier. Once you book, our dispatch team lists your shipment to our vetted auto carrier network. Standard orders are typically picked up within 1–4 business days; Expedited and Rush orders move faster. We confirm carrier assignment and provide the driver’s contact information before pickup.

Step 3 — Pickup and inspection. The carrier arrives at your agreed location, inspects your vehicle, and documents its condition on the Bill of Lading. You sign the pickup report. For urban Hudson County and dense Newark-area pickups, the car carrier coordinates a nearby meet-point. Suburban NJ pickups are typically door-to-door. JB MDL on-base pickups coordinate with the base transportation office.

Step 4 — Delivery and final inspection. Your vehicle arrives at the destination. Do a thorough inspection against the pickup Bill of Lading before signing the delivery report. Payment is due at delivery — typically by cash or certified funds payable to the carrier. We do not charge your card until delivery is complete.

New Jersey university and college car shipping

New Jersey’s research universities and liberal arts colleges generate thousands of student and faculty vehicle shipments each year. Rutgers’ multiple campuses in New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden account for the largest single-institution volume in the state. Princeton, NJIT, and Seton Hall add professional and graduate school demand concentrated in different parts of the state. Book at least two weeks ahead during the late-August and September academic arrival window and the May departure peak.

New Jersey military base car shipping

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JB MDL) — Burlington/Ocean Counties: The only tri-service military installation in the United States, combining Army (Fort Dix), Air Force (McGuire), and Navy (Lakehurst) missions on a single contiguous installation. JB MDL generates among the highest combined-service PCS vehicle shipping volumes of any single installation on the East Coast. Common PCS vehicle shipping routes include Fort Liberty (NC), Fort Campbell (KY), Langley AFB (VA), and Joint Base San Antonio (TX). Expedited tier is strongly recommended for moves with fixed report dates. On-base pickups coordinate through the base transportation office for gate access.

Naval Weapons Station Earle — Colts Neck (Monmouth County): A deep-water pier and ammunition storage facility in suburban Monmouth County. The rural location places it away from primary auto carrier trunk routes; Expedited tier is recommended for time-sensitive vehicle shipments to and from this installation. The route from NWS Earle connects via the Garden State Parkway and NJ Turnpike for southbound and northbound carrier access.

Picatinny Arsenal — Rockaway (Morris County): An Army research and development installation in the Morris County highlands, accessible via I-80 west from the NJ Turnpike corridor. The workforce is primarily civilian scientists and engineers. Carrier access is solid via the I-80 corridor, and most vehicle shipping from this area is door-to-door capable through the broader Morris County suburban network.

New Jersey cities we serve

Newark: Newark is the epicenter of New Jersey auto transport, anchored by the Port of Newark/Elizabeth — one of the largest container ports on the East Coast — and the NJ Turnpike Exit 14/14A interchange. Carrier density here rivals any point on the East Coast. Residential street access in older Newark neighborhoods may require a meet-point on McCarter Highway or the commercial corridors near I-78; most carrier dispatchers are familiar with the standard Newark staging areas and will confirm your location in advance.

Jersey City and Hoboken: Hudson County’s waterfront communities are among the most logistics-complex auto transport locations in New Jersey. The 19th-century street grid in Jersey City and Hoboken cannot accommodate standard 75-foot multi-car transporters on most residential blocks. Meet-point coordination is standard practice: Journal Square, Liberty State Park, and the Route 1&9 corridor in Kearny for Jersey City; Washington Street and the Hoboken Terminal area for Hoboken. Despite the meet-point protocol, carrier frequency is extremely high due to proximity to the Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel approaches.

Elizabeth: Elizabeth shares the Newark carrier network and benefits from the same extraordinary freight density created by the Port of Newark/Elizabeth, Turnpike Exit 13, and the I-78 interchange. For vehicle shipping purposes, Elizabeth and Newark are functionally a single carrier hub — the most active on the East Coast between Boston and Baltimore. Door-to-door service is available in most of Elizabeth’s residential neighborhoods.

Edison and Woodbridge: Middlesex County’s Route 1 Research Corridor and the I-287/NJ Turnpike nexus at Exit 10 make Edison and Woodbridge two of the most carrier-accessible suburban auto transport markets in the state. Pharmaceutical and tech campus relocations from the Johnson & Johnson, Merck, and Pfizer supplier networks in this corridor generate consistent year-round vehicle shipping demand. Suburban streets throughout both communities are overwhelmingly door-to-door capable.

Toms River: Ocean County’s hub city and the primary gateway for vehicle transport along the Jersey Shore. Toms River sits at the intersection of Route 9 and the Garden State Parkway, giving auto carriers practical access to the northern Ocean County communities (Brick, Point Pleasant, Bay Head) and the southern shore communities (Seaside Heights, Island Beach, Barnegat). Vehicle shipping here is reliable year-round, though summer weekends slow carrier scheduling throughout the Shore region.

Trenton and Princeton: New Jersey’s capital sits at the intersection of I-295, the NJ Turnpike, and US-1, making it one of the most naturally accessible auto transport markets in the state. State government and Princeton University vehicle relocations anchor consistent demand. The Ewing-Lawrence-Princeton suburban corridor is broadly door-to-door capable. Princeton itself is served via Turnpike Exit 8A and benefits from proximity to Route 1 carrier traffic.

Cherry Hill and Camden: South Jersey’s largest population center functions as part of the greater Philadelphia vehicle shipping market. The Ben Franklin Bridge and Walt Whitman Bridge connect Cherry Hill and Camden to I-76 and I-95 in Philadelphia, giving carriers access to both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey networks simultaneously. Suburban Cherry Hill, Voorhees, and Marlton are among the most door-to-door-accessible auto transport markets in the state.

Hackensack and Bergen County: Northern New Jersey’s carrier access runs along the I-80/Route 17 corridor, connecting Bergen County to the George Washington Bridge approach and the broader NY metro auto transport network. Hackensack’s central Bergen County location and its commercial corridor on Route 17 make it a reliable Standard-tier vehicle shipping market. Suburban Bergen County communities with access to I-80 and the Palisades Interstate Parkway benefit from high carrier frequency due to proximity to the GWB.

Atlantic City and the Southern Shore: The Garden State Parkway’s southern terminus connects Atlantic City and the southernmost Shore communities to the broader NJ carrier network. Casino district vehicle transport and seasonal Shore demand from Ocean City, Sea Isle, and Wildwood generate consistent but cyclical shipping volumes. Carrier access diminishes south of Atlantic City; Cape May is the furthest point from Turnpike carrier trunk routes in the state. Expedited tier is strongly recommended for any time-sensitive vehicle relocation to or from Atlantic City, Ocean City, Wildwood, and Cape May year-round.

Paterson and Clifton: Passaic County’s urban core and its suburban neighbor are served primarily by the I-80 east-west corridor and Route 46. Paterson’s older urban street grid may require a meet-point in some residential neighborhoods; Clifton’s suburban commercial corridors along Route 3 and Route 46 are generally accessible door-to-door. Carrier frequency in this area is solid year-round due to proximity to I-80 and the Route 46 access to I-95/NJ Turnpike via I-280.

New Jersey State vehicle and driving resources

  1. New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) — The primary resource for registering and titling a vehicle after it arrives in New Jersey. New residents have 60 days to register their vehicle after establishing residency and must obtain a New Jersey driver’s license within the same window.
  2. MVC Vehicle Inspection & Emissions (VEIP) — New Jersey requires an emissions inspection for most gasoline-powered vehicles. Check your county and vehicle eligibility before completing registration. Most vehicles must pass inspection before or shortly after NJ plates are issued.
  3. E-ZPass New Jersey — Manages electronic toll accounts for the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Atlantic City Expressway, and Outerbridge Crossing. Remove your E-ZPass transponder from your vehicle before shipping to prevent toll charges during transport.
  4. New Jersey Turnpike Authority — Real-time NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway traffic, construction, and incident information. Useful for tracking I-95 corridor conditions that affect carrier routing and transit times during your vehicle shipment.
  5. FMCSA SAFER System — Verify a Carrier’s License — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s carrier lookup tool. Verify that any auto transport company or car hauling broker you consider is federally licensed and insured before booking. Direct Express Auto Transport is FMCSA Licensed (MC #479342).

Popular long-distance New Jersey car shipping routes

New Jersey to Florida Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Florida Snowbird corridor is one of the most iconic and heavily traveled auto transport routes on the East Coast. Bergen, Monmouth, Ocean, and Somerset County retirees and shore-home owners shipping vehicles to Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Naples, and Sarasota have made this one of the most predictably carrier-dense vehicle hauling routes in the country. The route follows I-95 south the entire way — through Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia before entering Florida. Standard transit is 2–4 days. Southbound fall departures and northbound spring returns are peak demand windows; book ahead.

New Jersey to North Carolina Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-North Carolina corridor is driven by two powerful currents: the ongoing migration of NJ and NY metro residents to the Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) and Charlotte, and military PCS vehicle shipping between JB MDL and Fort Liberty (Fayetteville). Retirees and remote workers priced out of the Northeast have made Charlotte and the Triangle among the most rapidly growing auto shipping destinations for New Jersey residents. The I-95 south to I-85 routing connects both corridors efficiently. Standard transit is 2–4 days.

New Jersey to Georgia Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Atlanta corridor serves the migration of Northeast professionals to Atlanta’s growing financial, media, and tech sectors, as well as pharma and biotech vehicle relocations between New Jersey’s pharma corridor and Georgia’s pharmaceutical manufacturing belt around Augusta and Columbus. The route runs I-95 south through South Carolina into Georgia, or via I-81 south through the Shenandoah Valley to I-85 into Atlanta. Standard transit is 3–5 days.

New Jersey to Ohio Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Ohio corridor connects the New York metro pharmaceutical and financial sectors to Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. The route typically runs I-78 west to I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) west into Ohio. Pharma and financial services vehicle transport between NJ and Ohio’s growing tech and healthcare sectors drives consistent demand. Standard transit is 2–3 days. Auto carrier frequency on the PA Turnpike corridor is excellent.

New Jersey to Michigan Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Michigan corridor connects the financial and pharmaceutical industries of the NY/NJ metro to the automotive industry in Metro Detroit. Executive and professional vehicle relocations between these two sectors — as pharma and automotive increasingly intersect in electric vehicle and connected car development — drive steady two-way auto shipping demand. The route runs the Pennsylvania Turnpike west to I-80 or I-90 into Michigan. Standard transit is 2–4 days.

New Jersey to Illinois Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Chicago corridor connects the NY/NJ financial and pharmaceutical metro to Chicago’s financial, legal, and healthcare sectors. The route runs I-78 or I-80 west across Pennsylvania and into Illinois. Chicago’s status as the Midwest’s largest financial center creates consistent executive vehicle relocation demand from the NJ pharma belt and the broader NY metro area. Standard transit is 3–5 days.

New Jersey to Texas Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Texas corridor has grown significantly as remote work and corporate relocations have redirected NJ metro talent to Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston. Pharma and biotech vehicle transport between NJ’s Route 1 research corridor and Texas’ growing life sciences sector in the Medical Center and Research District contribute professional auto shipping demand. Standard transit is 4–7 days via I-81 south and I-40 west to Texas.

New Jersey to Arizona Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Arizona Snowbird corridor is the second most important seasonal vehicle shipping route for Garden State retirees after Florida. Scottsdale, Chandler, Peoria, and Sun City receive a consistent influx of New Jersey winter residents each November. The route crosses the full width of the continent via I-78/I-76 west and I-40 west through New Mexico into Arizona. Standard transit is 5–7 days.

New Jersey to Colorado Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Colorado corridor serves outdoor enthusiasts, remote workers, and technology professionals relocating from the NJ metro to Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins. The Front Range has attracted significant migration from the Northeast, particularly from NY/NJ metro residents seeking more affordable housing and outdoor access. Standard transit is 4–6 days via I-78/I-76 west to I-70 west into Colorado.

New Jersey to California Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-California corridor is the ultimate cross-country vehicle transport move — connecting the NY/NJ metro’s financial, pharmaceutical, and media industries to Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Tech workers relocating from NJ to the Bay Area and pharmaceutical scientists moving between the NJ pharma corridor and South San Francisco’s biotech hub drive professional auto shipping demand on this route. Standard transit is 7–10 days. This is one of the most carrier-dense transcontinental vehicle hauling routes in the country due to volume.

New Jersey to New York Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-New York corridor is a unique short-haul auto transport market driven by the constant movement of residents between the NY metro’s two major states. Long Island to NJ, upstate New York to Bergen County, and Manhattan to Montclair or Short Hills are typical vehicle relocations within this corridor. Standard transit is 1–2 days — often same-day dispatch. This is among the easiest car shipping routes in the country to fill quickly. Note that Manhattan delivery involves the borough-specific meet-point protocol described on our New York State car shipping page.

New Jersey to Washington State Car Shipping

The New Jersey-to-Washington State corridor is the longest transcontinental auto transport route in New Jersey’s portfolio — spanning nearly 2,900 miles from the NJ Turnpike to the Pacific Coast. Tech workers relocating from Amazon’s and Microsoft’s East Coast offices to the Seattle-Bellevue-Redmond headquarters campus drive professional vehicle relocation demand on this route. Standard transit is 7–10 days via I-80 west across the northern tier to I-84 or I-90 into Washington State.

Nearby states we also serve from New Jersey

New York

New York is New Jersey’s most active neighboring state for auto transport. The NY/NJ metro area functions as a single carrier market, with the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, and Goethals Bridge connecting the two states’ auto carrier networks seamlessly. We serve all New York State locations — from Manhattan and Long Island through the Hudson Valley and Catskills to Buffalo and Niagara Falls — with the same carrier frequency as core NJ locations.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is New Jersey’s primary western neighbor for vehicle shipping. The Delaware River crossings — the Delaware Memorial Bridge, Walt Whitman Bridge, Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and Trenton Makes Bridge — connect New Jersey to Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Turnpike corridor seamlessly. We serve all Pennsylvania locations, with Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, and the Lehigh Valley receiving the highest car carrier frequency from New Jersey origin points.

Delaware

Delaware is New Jersey’s southern neighbor, accessible via the Delaware Memorial Bridge on I-295/I-95 or by ferry across Delaware Bay from Cape May to Lewes. We serve Wilmington, Dover, Newark (DE), and the Delaware beaches. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry route offers an alternative routing that bypasses Philadelphia and the Delaware Memorial Bridge congestion for vehicles originating in South Jersey.

Connecticut

Connecticut is accessible from New Jersey via the NY metro auto carrier network, crossing into Connecticut via I-95 through the Bronx and Westchester or via the Tappan Zee/Mario Cuomo Bridge on I-287. We serve all Connecticut locations, with Stamford, Greenwich, Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford, and New London representing the most active vehicle shipping destinations from New Jersey origin points.

Maryland

Maryland is a frequent intermediate stop and direct auto shipping destination from New Jersey. The I-95 corridor through Baltimore to the DC metro area carries heavy car carrier traffic, and Baltimore Harbor destinations, Annapolis, and the Eastern Shore communities are all well served from NJ origin points. Standard transit New Jersey to Baltimore is typically same-day or one day.

New Jersey auto transport by region

The NJ Turnpike Corridor: Newark, Elizabeth, and the Northeast Gateway

The Newark-Elizabeth nexus — where the NJ Turnpike, I-78, I-95, and the Garden State Parkway converge — is the single most carrier-dense location in New Jersey and one of the most active auto transport interchange points on the entire East Coast. The Port of Newark/Elizabeth, the Newark Liberty International Airport ground transportation corridor, and the proximity to the Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel approaches mean that car carriers serving this area have access to more available freight, more routing options, and more loading flexibility than anywhere else in the state. For vehicle shippers in Newark, Elizabeth, Linden, Rahway, and the immediate Turnpike corridor, standard pickup windows are the shortest in New Jersey. Key cities: Newark, Elizabeth, Linden, Rahway, Kearny, Harrison, Carteret.

Hudson County: Jersey City, Hoboken, and the Urban Waterfront

Hudson County’s urban waterfront communities present the most logistically nuanced auto shipping environment in New Jersey. Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Weehawken, and Union City are densely built on a 19th-century grid that was designed for horse-drawn traffic — not 75-foot multi-car transporters. Meet-point coordination is standard practice in these communities, and shippers should expect the car carrier to identify a nearby commercial staging area rather than attempting a residential door-to-door approach. The upside: carrier frequency is extremely high due to proximity to the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, and Holland Tunnel approach corridors. Key cities: Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Weehawken, Union City, West New York, North Bergen.

The Pharma Corridor: Middlesex, Somerset, and Morris Counties

The pharmaceutical belt running along I-287 and Route 1 through Middlesex, Somerset, and Morris Counties is New Jersey’s most distinctive professional vehicle transport market. Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, Merck in Kenilworth and Rahway, Pfizer in Parsippany and Pearl River (just over the NY border), Novartis in East Hanover, and dozens of CROs and specialty pharma firms generate a steady stream of executive and scientist vehicle relocations to and from this corridor. Auto carrier access is excellent along the I-287 loop and the Route 1 Research Corridor. Key cities: New Brunswick, Piscataway, Edison, Woodbridge, Rahway, Somerville, Bridgewater, Parsippany, East Hanover, Kenilworth.

Central New Jersey: Trenton and Mercer County

Trenton, New Jersey’s capital city, sits at the intersection of I-295, I-95/NJ Turnpike, and US-1 — making it one of the most naturally accessible auto transport locations in the state. State government vehicle relocations, Princeton University moves, and the logistics of the Trenton-Philadelphia metro corridor drive consistent auto carrier traffic through this area. The Trenton-Ewing-Lawrenceville suburban corridor is primarily door-to-door capable. Key cities: Trenton, Hamilton, Ewing, Lawrence, Princeton, Hightstown, Bordentown.

South Jersey: Camden County and the Philadelphia Metro

South Jersey functions as part of the greater Philadelphia vehicle shipping market. The Ben Franklin Bridge and Walt Whitman Bridge connect Camden and Cherry Hill to I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and I-95 in Philadelphia, giving South Jersey auto carriers seamless access to the Pennsylvania carrier network. Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Marlton, Haddonfield, and Moorestown are among the most suburban-accessible auto transport destinations in New Jersey. Key cities: Cherry Hill, Camden, Voorhees, Marlton, Haddonfield, Moorestown, Medford, Mount Laurel.

The Jersey Shore: Monmouth and Ocean Counties

The Jersey Shore vehicle shipping market is uniquely seasonal. During the summer months, communities from Sandy Hook to Barnegat Light experience beach traffic, parking restrictions, and seasonal road conditions that complicate car carrier access. Asbury Park, Long Branch, Spring Lake, Manasquan, Bay Head, and the barrier island communities of Long Beach Island are best served by the Expedited tier during July and August when carrier scheduling around beach traffic is essential. The fall-to-spring off-season is significantly more accessible and less expensive for auto transport. Toms River serves as the primary hub for Ocean County. Key cities: Asbury Park, Long Branch, Toms River, Brick, Lakewood, Point Pleasant, Barnegat, Seaside Heights, Long Beach Township.

The Southern Shore and Cape May

Atlantic County, Cape May County, and the southernmost communities of the Garden State — Atlantic City, Ocean City, Wildwood, Cape May — represent the most geographically remote auto shipping destinations in New Jersey from the Turnpike carrier corridor. The Garden State Parkway provides a direct north-south car carrier route to these communities, but carrier frequency decreases significantly south of Toms River. Cape May, at the southern tip, is the furthest point from major carrier trunk routes in the state and should always use Expedited tier for reliable vehicle shipping pickup scheduling. Key cities: Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Township, Vineland, Millville, Ocean City (NJ), Wildwood, Cape May, Stone Harbor.

New Jersey Car Shipping — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from New Jersey?

New Jersey car shipping costs range from $285 on very short hauls to New York and Pennsylvania up to $1,670+ on transcontinental routes to Washington State. The Florida Snowbird corridor — the most active NJ long-haul lane — typically runs $720–$1,005 for a standard sedan. Mid-range routes to Ohio and Michigan run $420–$670. Long-haul routes to Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and California run $895–$1,530. Use our online calculator for a real-time quote based on your specific route, vehicle, and tier.

How long does it take to ship a car to or from New Jersey?

Transit time depends on route distance and carrier availability. New York and Pennsylvania: 1–2 days. North Carolina or Georgia: 2–5 days. Florida: 2–4 days. Ohio: 2–3 days. Michigan or Illinois: 2–5 days. Texas: 4–7 days. Arizona or Colorado: 4–7 days. California: 7–10 days. Washington State: 7–10 days. Expedited and Rush tiers do not shorten driving time but reduce pickup wait and prioritize carrier assignment.

Can I get door-to-door car shipping in New Jersey?

In most of New Jersey, yes — standard door-to-door service applies. Suburban communities throughout Bergen, Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, Burlington, Camden, and Atlantic Counties are virtually always accessible for multi-car transporters. The exception is dense urban Hudson County: Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Weehawken, and Union City have narrow residential streets that cannot accommodate large transporters. In these areas, carriers coordinate a meet-point at a nearby accessible commercial location. Downtown Newark and older sections of Elizabeth and Paterson may also require a nearby meet-point on a case-by-case basis.

How does shipping a car to or from the Jersey Shore work?

Most Jersey Shore communities are accessible by road and can be served by auto transport carriers. However, carrier frequency decreases south of Toms River, beach traffic during summer complicates scheduling in July and August, and barrier island communities with limited bridge access may require a mainland meet-point. Expedited tier is strongly recommended for Shore addresses during peak summer season to ensure timely carrier assignment. Cape May and the southern Shore communities are furthest from carrier trunk routes and benefit most from Expedited tier year-round.

How does JB MDL military car shipping work?

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is the only tri-service military installation in the United States, combining Army, Air Force, and Navy PCS move volumes into a single location. We are experienced with all three services’ PCS vehicle shipping protocols and can work within your orders timeline. On-base pickups at JB MDL coordinate through the base transportation office for gate access. Common PCS routes from JB MDL include Fort Liberty (NC), Fort Campbell (KY), Langley AFB (VA), and Joint Base San Antonio (TX). Expedited tier is recommended for moves with fixed report dates.

How do I prepare my car for shipping from New Jersey?

Clean your vehicle inside and out so pre-existing scratches and dents are clearly visible. Remove all personal items — carriers are not licensed to transport personal belongings and items left in the vehicle are not insured. Photograph every panel, the windshield, wheels, and undercarriage before the carrier arrives. Leave approximately a quarter tank of fuel. New Jersey-specific: remove your E-ZPass transponder from the windshield before shipping — the device will be charged on NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Atlantic City Expressway, and any other E-ZPass toll roads the carrier travels during transport.

What is the best time of year to ship a car to or from New Jersey?

Fall (September through November) is often the best window — Shore season has ended, Snowbirds are heading south generating excellent southbound carrier flow on I-95, and weather is mild. Spring (March through May) is the second best window as Snowbirds return north and carrier frequency is high on both northbound and southbound routes. Summer is excellent for non-Shore addresses but Expedited tier is recommended for Shore communities due to beach traffic. Winter (December through February) is fully serviceable but NJ Turnpike ice events can occasionally cause brief delays; allow extra transit buffer.

Do I need to register my vehicle when I move to New Jersey?

Yes. New New Jersey residents must register their vehicle with the MVC within 60 days of establishing residency. You will need your out-of-state title, valid NJ auto insurance, and payment for registration and title fees. New Jersey requires a vehicle emissions inspection (VEIP) for most gasoline-powered vehicles registered in the state — your vehicle must pass inspection before registration is completed or within the first inspection cycle. Check current inspection requirements and exemptions at nj.gov/mvc. New Jersey has no grace period for driving unregistered out-of-state plates once you have established NJ residency.

Is my car insured during transport?

Yes. Every carrier in our network is required by FMCSA regulations to carry cargo insurance covering your vehicle during transport. Coverage is typically $100,000 per load. We verify carrier insurance before every shipment. At pickup, complete a thorough Bill of Lading inspection with the driver and document any pre-existing condition. At delivery, inspect the vehicle before signing the delivery report. If new damage is found, note it on the delivery report and contact us immediately — do not sign the delivery report without noting the damage in writing.

Can I ship a car from New Jersey to Florida for the winter?

Absolutely — this is one of the most common requests we handle from New Jersey. The NJ-to-Florida Snowbird route is one of the most carrier-dense and well-established auto transport lanes on the entire East Coast. The I-95 corridor through Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia into Florida carries daily carrier traffic in both directions. Typical southbound departures run October through December; northbound returns run February through April. Standard transit is 2–4 days door to door. Destinations throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Lee, Collier, and Sarasota Counties are all well served.
