The Volvo 300 was a rear wheel drive car sold as both a hatchback and as a conventional sedan from 1976 until 1991. The model was developed in the Netherlands after Volvo bought a stake in DAF in 1973. The series consisted of the Volvo 340 and the Volvo 360. The 300 series was odd in that it had the gearbox mounted over the rear axle, while the 360 had the propeller shaft enclosed in a torque tube. As a whole, the 300 series was taken to be heavy and unrewarding to drive but reliable and safe. To illustrate this, a famous advertisement for the 300 series in the late 1980s saw a crash test dummy return to life and drive a 340 out of a second floor factory window, and nose-dive into the concrete ground. This led to the infamous saying, “Designed by computers, built by robots, driven by dummies”. This was not exactly the tag line that Volvo was hoping to develop. This was a prime example of marketing gone astray.

Anyhow, back to the beginning of things, DAF had already begun development of this car as a replacement for the Volvo 66. It was equipped with a 1.4 liter Renault engine in the front and DAF’s drastic Variomatic continuously variable transmission unusually mounted in the rear. This assisted with the weight distribution. Later, a conventional manual transmission from the 200 series was made available in 1979. Then a five-door model, the 345, was added in 1980. In 1981 there was an additional engine option, with that being a 2.0 liter B19A unit, which was again from the Volvo 240. Further, a redesigned grille and front headlight arrangement could be called a minor facelift in 1981. During this same upgrade, the model also obtained a new dashboard and a revised interior.
