Audi A8

The Audi A8 is an impressive full-size luxury car built by the German automaker Audi. This is an extremely challenging market to compete in and the A8 faces stiff competition from the Volkswagen Phaeton, long wheelbase Jaguar XJ8 and Lexus LS; but more so, the competition is hot between the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series. The A8 has been on the market since 1994 and has successfully established itself as a popular alternative to these long-running competitors. Consumers have recognized that there is a new kid on the block that really has a lot to offer in both looks and in what is available under the hood. Most versions feature the Quattro all-wheel-drive as a standard offering, as well as a multitronic or tiptronic automatic transmission. The A8 first made its debut in Europe in 1994 and sadly wasn't available in the United States until 1997. That seems to be the problem with all the performance cars coming from foreign markets; Americans are always the last to have the opportunity to drive and own these pieces of work. Unlike the V8 model, which was built on an existing steel platform, the A8 debuted on Audi's then-new D2 platform, which was an all aluminum space frame that helped to significantly reduce weight without being any less rigid. Drivers could order the sedan in both the A8 and the A8L long-wheelbase version. For a little more room, choose the A8L which has 5 inches of additional wheelbase, which are entirely devoted to rear-seat space. In addition to being the world's first car built on an entirely aluminum platform, updates to the car in 1997 included the addition of six interior airbags, make the A8 an excellent choice in the safety category. A second generation A8 hit the market in early 2003 using Audi's D3 platform. The model was longer than before, and thankfully could carry four or five adult occupants in the cabin depending on rear seat configuration. Taller individuals can feel true luxury riding in the A8, as they are given sufficient room to stretch out in absolute comfort.
