Car Shipping for Saturn SW Series The first generation SL and SW were manufactured from model year 1991 to 1995. This was the first series of Saturn vehicles. The Z-body platform was developed entirely in-house at Saturn and shared very little with the rest of the General Motors model line. Not that this really mattered as the first Saturn to leave the assembly line in the Spring Hill, Tennessee factory was on July 30, 1990. All S-Series cars were available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The S-series debuted with the SC sports coupe and the SL sedan level models in 1990 as 1991 models. Later, the SW sedan wagon debuted at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The SL1 trim level included a SOHC 1.9 L I4 LK0 engine that was rated at 85 hp, which was later upgraded to the 100 hp L24 engine for the 1995 model year. The SL2 trim level included a DOHC 1.9 L I4 LL0 engine that was rated at 124 hp. Both the SL1 and SL2 had a fuel economy rated at 29 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. The 1991-1992 model year Saturns offered the base SL that was available with a manual transmission only. For model year 1993, the line was expanded to include the SW1 and SW2 wagons, which were more or less identical to their SL1 and SL2 sister models.

There was also a classy special Homecoming edition of the SL2, which was launched in 1994. It had special Pearl White paint, black Saturn emblems, spoiler, leather interior, rear headrests, sunroof and power locks and windows. The S-series lived on for quite some time, as it was sold from the fall of 1990 through the end of the 2002 model year. Much needed redesigns occurred in 1996 and in 2000.
