Car Shipping for Saturn Ion Well, this is not chemistry or physics class, but you could easily be confused. In fact, it is true that Saturn named a vehicle, ION. The Saturn ION was a compact car sold by the Saturn marquee of American automaker General Motors. It was built upon the GM Delta platform. Further, the ION replaced the Saturn S-Series in 2003. By 2006, the ION was the longest compact car sold in North America, and perhaps this played a part in the fact that production of the ION ended on March 27, 2007. During production, a Getrag F23 5-speed manual or an Aisin AF33 5-speed automatic transmission were offered. Additionally, the 2003 and 2004 IONs were available with the VTi transmission. The 2003 ION came standard with a 140 hp DOHC Ecotec I4 engine. In an interesting design layout, the ION's instrument panel is mounted on the top center of the dashboard, rather than behind the steering wheel. Further, it was offered in sedan and coupe forms, with the coupe being called a "quad coupe" due to the two smaller rear-opening suicide-type doors behind the front doors.

In 2004, Saturn launched the high-performance Red Line version of the ION, which featured a 205 hp supercharged engine, and a stronger F35 5-speed manual transmission. This model used a 2.0L version of General Motor's Ecotec engine, which was track tested at Germany's famous Nurburgring Nordschleife. At first, the ION was intended to be redesigned for 2008. But instead, General Motors dropped the idea of a 2008 ION, and in March 2007, the ION was discontinued. It is said to be replaced by the European-built Saturn Astra hatchback, which is really just a rebadged Opel Astra. Perhaps Saturn will learn to take more care in the naming of their models – anyone could have predicted that a model called the ‘ION’ would not fly.
