The Phantom was Rolls-Royce's replacement for the original Silver Ghost. One major improvement though over the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was the new pushrod-OHV straight-6 engine. It was constructed as three groups of two cylinders with detachable heads, and thus the large engine produced excellent power to pull the large heavy car. Further, like the famed Ghost, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was constructed both in the United Kingdom and United States. The US models trailed the UK by one year on introduction and two in replacement. Back to the engine - it used a 4.25 in bore and long 5.5 in stroke for a total of 7.7 L of displacement. Aluminum was substituted for cast iron in the cylinder heads in 1928. Semi-elliptical springs suspended the front, while cantilever springs were used in the rear. Additionally, 4-wheel servo-assisted brakes were also specified, though some initial US models lacked front brakes. It is 1.63 m tall, 1.99 m wide, 5.83 m long, and comes in weighing 5478 lb. Further, the Phantom can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. It has a six-speed automatic transmission and double wishbone suspension.

The differences between the US and UK models included available wheelbases. Both were equipped with the same 143.5 in base length, but the UK long-wheelbase model was longer at 150.5 in than the 146.5 in American version. Other differences included the transmission, as the UK models used a 4-speed and US models using a 3-speed manual transmission, both with a single dry-plate clutch. Furthering the differences, the UK models were built at Rolls' Derby factory, while US Phantoms were built in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was launched in 2003 and is the first Rolls-Royce branded car made under the ownership of BMW. Now the joining of these two companies is a match made in heaven.
