Now the Chevrolet SSR really was in a league of its own and it was predicted that it would do much better than it did. This was a very innovative model idea and sadly high gas prices were probably the reason for its quick demise. The Chevrolet SSR, which stands for Super Sport Roadster, was a convertible pickup truck made from 2003 through 2006. The truck was built on the Chevrolet TrailBlazer's platform but very attractively highlighted "retro" styling and a steel convertible top. This design was done by ASC. The SSR made its first pseudo appearance at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show as the SuperSport Roadster concept car. Later appearances included being the pace car for the 2003 Indianapolis 500 auto race.
As previously stated, sales were poor and the 2004 model sold below expectations with fewer than 9,000 sales. Perhaps the price point was above what the target market could bare. At $42,000 each it falls in an interesting price range between the lower end models and the upper end models and not really practically attracting either. It was probably marketed to those who couldn't afford it and those that could afford it really didn't want it. Things got even worse and General Motors had to issue layoffs because of the low sales. GM cited a 301-day supply of SSRs, and in December announced five weeks of layoffs at Lansing Craft Center - the factory that makes the SSR. As if things couldn't get any worse, they announced the closing of the factory on November 21, 2005. It would remain open and in operation until mid-2006. This was the sad end for the SSR and also for a lot of General Motor's employees. It is estimated that a total of 24,150 SSRs were produced over the years. Of the total production, only 24,112 were available for sale to the public ' who knows where the remainder ended up.
