The Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser was a mid-size station wagon manufactured from 1978 through 1996. At first, it was built upon the rear-wheel drive A-body platform. As changes were made to the platforms, the Cruiser was also redesigned to accommodate the changes. The lower-trim Cutlass models, along with the A-body, were redesigned and as a result became front-wheel drive. At this point though, the Cutlass Cruiser remained rear-wheel drive, and was based upon the coveted G platform along with the Cutlass Supreme. By 1984, it was downsized to the Cutlass Ciera's body, as it shared the front-wheel drive A platform with the very similar Buick Century, the Pontiac 6000 and the Chevrolet Celebrity. In terms of some specifics, from 1984-1988 its wheelbase was 104.5 inches, but when the GM A platform was updated for 1989, its wheelbase was increased to 104.9 inches.
The Cutlass Cruiser, much like its siblings, proved to be a fairly cheap option for consumers. It was economical to get into and economical to operate. The engine choices ranged from a 2.5 L Iron Duke I4 engine all the way up to a 3.8 L V6. By 1990 through 1994, the Cutlass Cruiser was offered in two trim levels: the first being the S and the second being the SL. Later, in 1995, the S was dropped. This model was offered with many features including power windows, air conditioning, a cassette player and deluxe cloth. As a result, the 8-passenger Cutlass Cruiser sold well until its production ended. It appears that consumers at the time were seeking a nice large automobile to tote the family to and fro, and the Cruiser was just such a model. It was a solid performer for Oldsmobile at a time when they really needed it. In fact, Oldsmobile really had a nice run in the marketplace for some time until the brand took a nosedive as it refused to be innovative and fresh.
