The Grand Marquis, Mercury's flagship sedan, is more or less a slightly more luxurious version of the Ford Crown Victoria. It comes in five main trim levels with the GS being the base model, the GS Convenience, the LS Premium, the LS Ultimate and the LSE. The trim level can be recognized by the fifth, sixth and seventh digits in the VIN. The Mercury Grand Marquis is a full-size rear-wheel drive sedan branded by the Mercury division of the Ford Motor Company and produced at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Canada. It was additionally built in St. Louis, Missouri until 1985. Mercury has forever been marketed as a step-up from the Ford brand and has in times gone by been more performance and luxury oriented. There are indications of that in the Grand Marquis, for it is properly equipped, and the large sedan can be both a comfortable semi-luxury sedan while still offering adequate performance. The Grand Marquis shares the same Panther platform as the Ford Crown Victoria, the Lincoln Town Car and the former Mercury Marauder. Latest model years have the greater power outputs of 224 and 239 hp.

The only exemption for power output was the Mercury Marauder, which was the Grand Marquis' high performance cousin. It was powered by a DOHC version of the 4.6 L engine and produced 302 hp. Power is carried to the rear end by a four-speed electronically controlled, automatic transmission. This transmission is known as the 4R70W, and is the descendant of Ford's AOD and AODE transmissions of the early 1990s. This model is pretty cheap, as prices for the Grand Marquis range from $25,555 to $36,060 depending on options and trims.
