The Eagle Premier was developed by the American Motors Corporation (AMC) and Renault partnership and later the model was inherited by the Chrysler Corporation when it acquired AMC in 1987. The Eagle Premier was in production from 1988 until 1992. This full-size four-door sedan was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro and thus the car’s mechanical design was simply a reconverted top-of-the-range Renault 25. The motor was derived from the very famous PRV V6 engine, which was the product of a joint venture between Peugeot, Renault and Volvo. More so, it was the first large car fielded by AMC since 1974, a position that was customarily occupied by the Nash and AMC Ambassador models since the 1930s.

AMC marketed the Premier as a sporty refined sedan in the style of an Acura Legend or an Audi 5000. Additionally, it featured the spaciousness of American sedans and was the roomiest car in its class. In its time, the car was considered one of the sportiest sedans available on the American market, thanks to its French legacy. As a result, it could easily match any German, Italian or Swedish sport sedan which was a huge claim to make. It also easily outperformed many other cars such as those from Volvo. Perhaps this was all a result of the fact that the engineering levels achieved in the Premier are arguably the most refined in a sedan that was produced by AMC or Chrysler. The Eagle Premier was also sold as the Dodge Monaco from 1990 to 1992. To further the name confusion, the car was to be called the Renault Premier, of course that was before Chrysler acquired AMC. That explains why early 1988 production left the factory with Renault Premier badging. Nevertheless, the AMC logo was continued on many components through 1992.
