The Renault Fregate was a large car manufactured by the French automaker Renault between 1951 and 1960. It was envisioned in the years following World War II, a time at which Renault had recently been brought under control of the French state. They were needing a new modern model to improve its image and to meet the needs of consumers in the quickly recovering economy. The Renault Fregate was initially offered in two trim levels: the first being the Affaires and the second being the Amiral. Renault addressed the complaints about the lack of power from the 2 liter engine by launching the new 2141 cc engine in 1956, which produced 77 hp. Prior though, several concept cars were produced before the Fregate design was put into production. At first the car had a rear-engined layout much like the recently launched Renault 4CV but eventually the manufacturer chose to go with an engine mounted ahead of the driver. The Renault Fregate was officially unveiled at the 1950 Paris Motor Show but the first model was not delivered until November 1951. Further, a popular estate model badged the Domaine was also launched in 1956. This occurred along with the new, luxurious Grand Pavois specification. As to be expected, sales of the Fregate gradually fell throughout the 1950s and production ceased in 1960. In total, 163,383 Fregates were manufactured in Flins, France. Most people know very little about the automaker itself. Renault was a French vehicle manufacturer producing cars, vans, buses, tractors, and trucks. The company is well known for numerous ground-breaking designs, security technologies and motor racing. Further, the company was a project among brothers who pulled their skills to create some really fantastic cars. They remained innovative even during the World Wars, which was something that was not commonly occurring.
