Nissan was very focused on making improvements over the first generation Z given the fuel crisis of the 1970s. The focus was on fuel economy, emissions and aerodynamics. Additionally, this meant luxury features such as power windows and a high-end audio system were going to have to be offered as standard as the rest of the segment was focused on luxury offerings, and they could not afford to ostracize those buyers. The Nissan 280ZX, also known as the Datsun 280ZX, was a result of this thinking. It was a sports coupe produced from 1978 to 1983 and was the second generation Z-car. It replaced the Datsun 280Z in the end of 1978. The 280ZX was later replaced itself by the Nissan 300ZX in 1984. Before that though, the 280ZX was Motor Trends Import Car of the Year for 1979. The 280ZX was a complete redesign though of another model, and it retained only the L28 engine and a few other components from the 280Z. At the time, both a 2-seater and a 4-seater were offered. For the first time ever though, the 2+2 was a new design, as opposed to being a stretched version of the 2-seater. Some time later it was time to redo this model and the 280ZX's body was remade with aerodynamics in mind. This resulted in closing in the open grille of the first generation Z-car. Additionally, other improvements taken from wind tunnel testing were completed. The drag coefficient was reduced from 0.467 to 0.385, and the lift coefficient from 0.41 to 0.14. Not to mention, the new design had a lower center-of-gravity and a near 50/50 weight distribution. Further, the rear of the car was stretched to accommodate a larger 80 L fuel tank, which was desired by drivers. In total, the new body provided for better fuel economy and higher speed stability. Things had come a long way, in a short amount of time.
