The 1950 TD pooled together the TC's drivetrain, but was built with a modified hypoid geared rear axle with the MG Y-type chassis. It also included the familiar T-type style body. An independent suspension using coil springs in the front was also new, as were rack and pinion steering, smaller 15-inch disc type road wheels and a left-hand drive option. Additionally, bumpers, which were a huge safety enhancement, and over-riders became standard for the first time ever. The car was also 5 inches wider with a track of 50 inches, which was fairly large at the time. In 1950 the TD MkII was launched with a more tuned engine that had an 8.0:1 compression ratio. This gave out 57 bhp at 5500 rpm, which was much improved. In total, nearly 30,000 TDs had been produced when the series ended in 1953. Most interestingly, all but 1700 of those were exported. This highlighted how important that global market was already becoming. The MG T series of cars, which included the TA, the TB, the TC, the TD and the TF, were basic body-on-frame sports cars that were produced from 1936 through to 1955 cumulatively. The line was replaced by the MGA at that time. The MG TD's were manufactured in England from 1949 to 1953 and they established the sports car craze in the United States.
