Although it was not exported outside the home market, the second generation XG 350 was a hit in the Korean domestic market as the flagship sedan of the Hyundai lineup. Presumably, consumers in the United States do not even remember the XG 350. Also, with the number of automobile producers, it is hard to picture a Hyundai becoming so popular. Essentially, the North American automotive market is a very crowded one. It would be very difficult for a smaller and lesser-known maker to come in and have instantaneous success. The Hyundai XG 350 is an automobile first launched in 1986 under a different model name. During that time it underwent a few design changes. The third generation vehicle was marketed as the Hyundai XG in North America, while the fourth generation model was rebadged the Hyundai Azera in North America, Asia, South Africa and Chile. The Grandeur nameplate though is employed worldwide. This model is just one in a long list of rebadged vehicles. The first XG 350 was a rebadged Mitsubishi Debonair that was produced by Hyundai. It was initially launched with a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.0L SOHC MPI engine that was also used in the first generation Sonata. In 1987, a 2.4L SOHC MPI engine had been added and a V6 3.0L engine model was also launched in 1990 to fight with the Daewoo Imperial. The New XG and the third generation of the Mitsubishi Debonair were the products of a joint expansion between Hyundai and Mitsubishi Motors. Mitsubishi was accountable for the engine, and Hyundai was responsible for the body and trim design. Fabrication of this new joint project began in September 1992 and ended in 1998. This "New XG" came in various trim levels and 4 engine variations ' those being a 4-cylinder 2.0L and three V6 engines: 2.5L, 3L, and 3.5L.
