There are very few cars that command the type of presence as the Chevrolet Corvette. This beauty of a hot rod is still a favorite today. People are known to collect the Corvette and even join social clubs that are based around nothing else except this car. Not that collectors really seem to notice or care, but older generation Corvettes have been criticized for being crude and lacking in refinement when compared to their European counterparts. It seems though that the more recent models of the Corvette have been much improved in these areas. There has still been plenty of praise though to go around and not just from those collectors and drivers who still wash their Corvettes on a daily basis. Automobile Magazine has called the Vette the "coolest car in history", and Sports Car International placed it at prestigious number 5 on their list of the Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. More recently, the 1999 Corvette Convertible was named the Best Engineered Car of the 20th Century by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Anyone looking to purchase a Corvette though should not take these awards as reasons to go out and buy; one test-drive though and the buyer is sure to be sold.
