Audi R8

The year 2006 marks the release of the Audi R8, a mid-engine sports car released by the German automaker Audi. In 2005, Audi announced that the name of the victorious Audi R8 racecar would be used for a new production road car in 2007 and would be known as the Audi R8. This model was based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car, which took center stage at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show and again at the 2003 International Motor Show. Officially though, the R8 was not launched until the Paris Auto Show on September 30th 2006. Don't confuse the R8 with the R8 LMP, or with the fact that there was never an R9 released and in stead Audi moved right ahead and released the R10, skipping naming any car the R9. Scheduled for release in mid-2007, the Audi R8 will come equipped with a 4.2 L V8 making 420 hp, which is also seen in the Audi RS4. The base price of the car may take some by surprise – it is expected to start at $110,000. The dry weight of the vehicle is 1560 kg (3439 lb) making it able to achieve speeds from zero to sixty in 4.2 seconds and topping out at speeds of about 301 km/h (187 mph). Seeing that Audi is also the owner of Lamborghini, the R8's architecture such as layout and chassis is based on that of the Lamborghini Gallardo, not to mention the two vehicles share transmissions. However, he R8 is made dissimilar by its exterior styling, cabin, engine options, and pricing. The R8 is also at the forefront of technological changes taking place in the automotive industry and it the first production vehicle to feature all-LED headlights. The automotive industry is eager to see this powerhouse hit the market.
